Mental health conditions in older adults — particularly depression and anxiety — are among the most common yet most underdiagnosed and undertreated conditions in home-based care. Many elderly patients, their families and even healthcare providers attribute symptoms of depression (withdrawal, loss of interest, sleep disturbance, fatigue, hopelessness) to the normal process of ageing, leading to significant delays in diagnosis and treatment.
The consequences of undetected depression in elderly patients are serious: it accelerates cognitive decline, impairs management of physical health conditions, increases the risk of falls, and is associated with significantly higher mortality. Nurses and caregivers who spend regular time with patients are uniquely placed to identify subtle changes in mood, behaviour and social engagement that may indicate emerging mental health difficulties.
Mehermedics emphasises mental health awareness as a core competency for all placed nursing staff. Our nurses are trained in using validated screening tools (PHQ-9, GDS), delivering compassionate conversations about mental health in culturally sensitive ways, and facilitating timely referrals to psychology, psychiatry and community mental health services.
